A solid flat contrasting background and very carefull lighting. First overall diffuse light to illuminate it and then a single beam from an angle to cast a shadow. Play with moving that one around till you get the effect you want.

I’ve found that natural light (no flash) looks best, taken In the morning or early afternoon in the sunniest room in the house (near a window but not in harsh direct sunlight). For details and smaller projects it also helps to use the macro setting, which most digital cameras have. Also bought some cardboard stock colored paper for background.
